You seem pretty selfless for someone who has always been wronged by that society.

You seem pretty selfless for someone who has always been wronged by that society.

Relationships are a part of life, whatever shape they take, a friend, a partner, a lover, whatever name you wish to give it. As I grew older, I learned that we ought to make the most of it, to be kind to everyone regardless of who they are. I know this well. I also learned that since we will all eventually leave this world, it might be best to spend our time enjoying the company of our friends and those close to us. But I always feel misunderstood, again and again and again. It is tiring. It is depressing. People say that if it happens once, perhaps you were simply unlucky, or the fault lay with them. But when it happens more than twice, there is no one left to blame but yourself.

I gave so much. I read people carefully, felt for them, set aside my own logic to make room for empathy. And still it leads to the same ending, being misunderstood once more.

Perhaps this is the quiet cost of choosing to feel deeply in a world that mostly moves on instinct and convenience. Kindness does not always return in kind, and empathy is not always met with understanding. It can feel, after enough repetition, that you are the common thread in every disappointment, and so the fault must be yours.

They say to be loved is to be understood. In that same sense, to be misunderstood must be the opposite of love. And the opposite of love, as it turns out, is not hatred. It is indifference. At least hatred still requires someone to look closely enough to form an opinion.

If I cannot even manage to present myself clearly to the world, then what else could I possibly hope to succeed at?

Oscar Wilde once suggested that living is itself a kind of performance, a continuous act of self creation, shaped by our relationships and by the social world around us. Perhaps, then, being misunderstood is not a failure of that performance, but simply proof that it is still ongoing, still unfinished, still open to revision.

Art, after all, is never understood in only one way. A painting can be viewed in a thousand different ways. A sentence can carry numerous layers of meaning, some intended, some not. Art exists as it is, open to distortion, and yet it remains whole and real regardless of how it is read.

Maybe the beauty of art never lies in some universal, settled meaning, but in its refusal to be reduced to a single one. And maybe being human is much the same. Maybe the parts of us that go misunderstood are not flaws in the performance, but simply the price of being something too layered to be read in a glance.

If that is true, then perhaps I have been asking the wrong question all along. Not how do I make myself understood by everyone, but whether I even need to be.

A painting does not stop being art because one viewer walks past it without pausing. Perhaps I do not stop being whole simply because someone failed to read me correctly.
